The challenges of building a regional identity in Southeast Asia: Schools, histories, politics

研究成果概要:In FY 2017, this Start-Up research project undertook empirical work in LaoPDR, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar. Ove...In FY 2017, this Start-Up research project undertook empirical work in LaoPDR, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar. Over 25 interviews were conducted with nationalpolicymakers, UNESCO staff members, national textbook publishers, historians,civil society members, and school officials. Most of the interviews wererecorded and transcribed. Research collaborators in each country helpedorganize the data collection process. The primary investigator, combining multipleresearch funds, visited Lao PDR, Thailand, and Cambodia as part of thisresearch. In addition, a research collaborator in Vietnam was identifiedand plans are being made to collect data in FY 2018. While the data collection process was underway, the primary investigator wrotea book proposal and identified Cornell University Press as a likely publisher. Thepublisher has agreed to publish the book assuming it receives favorablereviews. The book, tentatively entitled, Historical Memory in the Mekong:Schools, histories, politics, willbe submitted for review by April 2018. Research disseminationoccurred through publications, presentations, and the press. Besides the eight forthcomingbook chapters that have been – or are being -- written, the primary investigatorwrote one book chapter (in press) and one journal article (under review). Apanel was organized at the Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies in Asiaconference, held in Bangkok, Thailand, which brought together three of the researchcollaborators (including the primary investigator). In addition, twopresentations were made at international conferences in Canberra and Hobart,Australia. During these conferences, business meetings were held with researcherswho have expertise in multicultural education as well as the politics of food(which happens to be one of four key themes of UNESCO’s shared history projectin Southeast Asia). Lastly, this research was spotlighted in the online magazineModernDiplomacy.
