Outline:

Research on programs for preventing eating disorders and systematic strategies to enhance the effects of such programs were reviewed. Several studies have investigated preventive programs in schools and programs targeting girls in a vulnerable age for developing these disorders. Findings suggest that preventive programs should focus not only on disorder specific risk factors but also on broader features including other mental health problems. Currently, dissonance-based interventions (DBIs) are considered the "gold-standard" of preventive programs for adolescent girls. It would be necessary to develop efficient and effective preventive programs requiring minimum number of sessions in the future, because other problems would also have to be addressed. It is suggested that preventive programs should specifically consider cognitive development, the training of teachers and students as facilitators, and addressing problems having shared risk factors.

Research trends on eating behaviors in young, healthy, girls in Japan were reviewed, and key perspectives and well-designed analog research aimed at developing clinical techniques for preventing eating disorders were examined. Many studies conducted in Japan have examined problems related to eating behaviors in young girls who are considered to be at high risk. However, conventional studies have not sufficiently contributed to improving the treatment of eating disorders. This could be because problems related to eating behavior are diverse, and studies that are unrelated to eating disorders have been reviewed. Moreover, treatment targets investigated to date have been inappropriate, and research methods have been limited. It is suggested that future studies should clarify the causal relationships of factors causing eating disorders through experimental methods. Furthermore, consideration of the quality of life, which is important in the treatment of eating disorders, should be considered.

Outline:

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is well established as an effective treatment for eating disorders. Nevertheless, only approximately 50% of patients being treated with current manual based CBT completely cease binge eating and purging. Therefore, improving CBT is a research priority. In this paper, we have discussed the utility and limitations of the cognitive behavioral model from the viewpoints of basic research on behavioral, cognitive, and physiological indicators. The results suggest the following. (1) The association between cognitive features and abnormal eating behaviors shown in previous studies reflects only one aspect of the actual clinical presentation. (2) The method of observing microstructural eating behaviors used in basic research could be considered an intervention. (3), Advancements in IT technology has enabled the simultaneous determination of cognitive and behavioral indicators that had been individually assessed until recently. Therefore, development of IT is expected to facilitate more detailed studies of cognitive behavioral models.

Outline:© 2017 Maeda, Sato, Shimada and Tsumura. There is growing evidence that individuals with social anxiety show impaired cortisol recovery after experiencing social evaluative stressors. Yet, little is known regarding the cognitive processes underlying such impaired cortisol recovery. The present study examined the effect of post-event processing (PEP), referred to as repetitive thinking about social situations, on cortisol recovery following a social stressor. Forty-two non-clinical university students (23 women, 19 men, mean age = 22.0 ± 2.0 years) completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), followed by a thought sampling procedure which assessed the frequency of PEP reflecting the TSST. A growth curve model showed PEP and social anxiety interactively predicted cortisol recovery. In particular, PEP predicted impaired cortisol recovery in those with low levels of social anxiety but not in those with high levels of social anxiety, which contradicted the initial hypothesis. These findings suggest that PEP is differentially associated with cortisol recovery depending on levels of social anxiety. The possible mechanisms underlying these findings were discussed in terms of protective inhibition framework.

Outline:© 2017, © The Author(s) 2017.Cognitive models of social anxiety posit that there are several types of maladaptive beliefs responsible for persistent social anxiety. Although these beliefs are theoretically important, currently there is no validated measure of these beliefs in Japan. In the present study, we translated into Japanese a well-validated measure of these beliefs, the Self-Beliefs Related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) Scale. The psychometric properties of the scale were also examined in two nonclinical samples (ns = 401 and 30). Using confirmatory factor analysis, the Japanese version of the SBSA was found to have a correlated three-factor structure that consisted of “conditional beliefs,” “unconditional beliefs,” and “high standard beliefs.” In addition, the Japanese version of the SBSA and its subscales demonstrated good internal consistency reliability and test–retest reliability. The Japanese version of the SBSA also demonstrated good convergent and divergent validity. Future applications of the Japanese version of the SBSA are discussed.

The contribution of habit as a reason for smoking under stressful conditions was investigated. In Study 1, the reasons for smoking including "Reduction of negative affect,""Elevation and stimulation,""Habitual use,""Pleasurable relaxation," and "Sensory motor manipulation" that influenced nicotine dependence were investigated. Results of a multiple regression analysis of data from 117 smokers suggested that the Habitual use factor had a significant influence on nicotine dependence. In Study 2, the influenced of the "Habitual use" factor on the desires to smoke under stressful conditions was investigated. Data of frequent habitual smokers (n=11) and less frequent habitual smokers (n=11) indicated that Habitual use did not influence the desire to smoke, or induce smoking for coping with stress, whereas the desire to smoke increased in stressful compared to neutral conditions regardless of the Habitual use scores. These results suggest that high habitual smokers smoke more in responses to stress and other reason than because of habit.

However, it has not been confirmed whether negative and positive automatic thoughts and aversive and pleasant activities and events are uniquely associated with NA and PA. Further, automatic thoughts are believed to be more associated with affect in older children. To test these possibilities, 234 fourth and sixth graders completed the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule for Children, the Automatic Thought Inventory for Children, and a pleasant and aversive activity and event survey. Analyses revealed that negative automatic thoughts and aversive activities and events were associated with NA, and positive automatic thoughts and pleasant activities and events were associated with PA for both fourth and sixth graders. Expectancy for support was associated with NA only for sixth graders. The results indicate the valence-specific relationship, but only partial support was obtained for age differences in the strength of the relationship.

Outline:

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of mindfulness and goal-setting focused cognitive behavioral group therapy (MGF) on the amphetamine use relapse risk of recidivist prisoners. As a group treatment, MGF combines cognitive behavioral group therapy, the body scan practice, and life map creation to develop emotion regulation and to increase motivation in life. A 2-group repeated-measures design was used, comparing the effects of MGF and treatment as usual (TAU; Nomura et al., 2014) on the amphetamine use relapse risk. Twenty-five men were screened for eligibility. Twelve participants received the MGF program. Thirteen participants received TAU. The Correctional Stimulant Relapse Risk Scale (Yamamoto et al., 2011) was completed twice (pre and post intervention) by the participants during the treatment program. The results revealed that scores on "emotional and motivational problems" showed significantly greater improvements in the MGF group than in the TAU group. Both groups showed improvements in scores on "impulsive and urgent for drug use,""positive expectancy for drug use,""lack of control over drug and crime," and "lack of negative expectancy for drug use." In particular, in both groups, individuals with lower reoffending rates showed large improvements in scores on "lack of negative expectancy for drug use."

Outline:© 2015 Tsumura et al.Background: Enhanced processing of emotional stimuli after stress exposure is reported to be associated with stress-induced cortisol. Because enhanced emotional information processing could make cognitive emotion regulation more difficult, it was hypothesized that stress-induced cortisol would be associated with non-negative interpretation generation associated with the cognitive reappraisal processes. Methods: A total of 36 participants (Mean age = 21.3years, SD = 1.8) watched video clips of depression-related stressful situations before and after the administration of a stress induction task. They were then asked to generate as many non-negative interpretations as possible to reduce the depressive mood. Saliva samples were obtained before and after the stress induction task to measure change in the cortisol level. Results: Participants were allocated post-hoc to either a responder (n = 19) or non-responder group (n = 17) based on the cortisol response to the stress induction task. The number of non-negative interpretations generated following the stress induction task was reduced only in the cortisol responders. The number of post-stress non-negative interpretations was fewer in the responder group when compared by sex, baseline cortisol level, and the number of pre-stress non-negative interpretations, statistically controlled. Conclusions: Although baseline cortisol and sex may have impacted the results, the results suggest that stress-induced cortisol is associated with difficulty in non-negative interpretation generation during the cognitive reappraisal process.

認知行動療法に基づく性犯罪再犯防止指導における心理アセスメントの方法論の開発

Research Results Outline:The present study investigated the effect of stress-management program focuThe present study investigated the effect of stress-management program focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability to...The present study investigated the effect of stress-management program focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability to their workplace contexts, in comparison to usual programs. One hundred and thirty-seven employees from 7 workplaces participated in the study. The data of the final sample, which consisted of a group of usual stress-management (N = 45), a group of stress-management with motivational interviewing (N = 20), and a group of stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability (N = 36), was subjected to the analysis. The stress response was significantly decreased in a group of stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability. In addition, individual employee's appraisal of coping acceptability with regard to proactive problem-solving significantly improved in a group of stress-management focusing on the appraisals of coping acceptability. On the other hand, no significant effect was observed in the other two groups. These findings suggest that facilitating the appraisals of individual coping acceptability to their workplace contexts would effectively facilitate a psychological adjustment as well as expanding coping repertories and facilitating the use of coping.

Fifty-five employees from five workplaces participated in thestudy. The data of the final sample, which consisted of a group of usualstress-management (N = 17) and a group of stress-management focusing on theappraisals of coping acceptability (N = 10), was subjected to the analysis. Theeffect of the stress-management focusing on the appraisals of copingacceptability differed depending on individual levels of novelty-seeking, whichis a tendency to prefer novel stimuli and rewards. In particular, while stressresponse significantly decreased in individuals with a low-level ofnovelty-seeking, stress response significantly increased in individuals with ahigh-level of novelty-seeking. The effect of the usual stress management wasnot observed, regardless of the individual levels of reinforcement sensitivity. These results suggest that stress-management focusing on the appraisals ofcoping acceptability is not uniformly effective; thus, assessment of individualdifferences in reinforcement sensitivity is essential when we apply the programin workplaces.

セルフ・コンパッションの程度が職場環境における機能的コーピングの選択に及ぼす影響

Research Results Outline:Morimoto and Shimada (2015) suggest that it is important to expand a copingMorimoto and Shimada (2015) suggest that it is important to expand a coping repertoire and appraisal of coping acceptability...Morimoto and Shimada (2015) suggest that it is important to expand a coping repertoire and appraisal of coping acceptability in the workplace context in implementing cognitive behavior stress management therapy. Those who have low self-compassion (SC), which is being kind and considerate to one’s self, can lean on coping time and again, which can lower their job performance and activate their stress response. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a coping repertoire, extent to which workplace context is taken into account, and SC on employees’ stress response and job performance. Six hundred full-time employees participated in the survey. Questions were posed to participants using the following surveys: (a)SC; (b)coping repertoire; (c)the work performance; (d)stress response; and (e)appraisal of coping acceptability in workplace context. The method was approved by the local ethical committee. As a result, it was indicated that those with higher SC and higher appraisal of coping acceptability in workplace context had relatively low stress responses. Additionally, it was also indicated that regardless of SC, both higher coping repertoire and higher appraisal of coping acceptability in workplace context positively contribute to job performance. This study shows that selecting a coping strategy appropriate to the workplace context can improve job performance and lower the stress response for those with higher SC. Therefore, based on these two results, this study indicates that employees’ stress management, stress response and job performance can be improved by not only encouraging the selection of a coping strategy that is appropriate to the workplace context, but also by raising self-compassion. The results of this study suggest that the degree of SC might be an individual factor affecting how stress response and job performance are expressed. Therefore, in future practice, we should adopt some practices that can enhance self-compassion.

児童生徒の不適応行動の変容に及ぼすストレスマネジメント教育の効果の検討
